Apanema Resort - Mykonos, Greece

Apanema Resort - Mykonos, Greece

I've only been to a few places that have allowed me to come back home and say "Pictures and videos cannot do this place justice." I've only been able to say "This place looks exactly like the photos online" a handful of times in my life. Apanema Resort in Mykonos, Greece fits perfectly into these categories. Picturesque, yes. Small and charming, yes. To die for views, yes. I could go on and on with endless details about this place, but first let me tell you why I chose Apanema out of almost 200 resorts and hotels on the island.

I did weeks of research after I booked our flights for this European vacation. The hotel was the most important part because it was a surprise for my boyfriend's 40th birthday. I wanted a room that would knock him off his feet. I was looking for something unlike any other place we had ever stayed. I looked through multiple blogs with information about the best places to stay. I read review after review on TripAdvisor. I was so confused. Mykonos is not like any other beach location we typically visit. We normally have a few chains that we stick with because we know the type of service you will get and the cleanliness of the hotel. But in Mykonos there are lots of options...everything from budget to ultra luxurious.

Location becomes a prime factor in your hotel choice. Do you prefer to be close to the beach or close to the town area? Is transportation an issue or will you be renting a car or scooter? There are so many factors and decisions that come into play that I had to make a chart with my favorites so I could compare all of the included options. Some places include round trip airport transfers. Some include breakfast. Others are steps from the beach. You will have to decide what works best for you. Apanema provided a few of the things that I thought were deal breakers and made me choose them over the others. They provide airport transportation, daily full breakfast, robe and slippers in the room, welcome fruit tray and drink. They are located about 10 minutes walking distance from town and about 5 minutes walking distance from the public bus stop. I made up my mind after contacting the resort and finding out they were able to accommodate multiple birthday requests and surprises. Marcelino was amazing. He gave me all kinds of information about the island, things to do, etc. He was able to work with a local baker to have a birthday cake made and delivered on my boyfriend's birthday. I was absolutely blown away by the detail and care put into our visit by this staff.

If you choose Apanema for your stay in Mykonos here is what you can expect. I reserved the Superior Double room with Jacuzzi. I actually reserved that room for the first two nights and a Superior Double for the last two nights. Upon arrival they had arranged for us to stay in the jacuzzi suite the entire time. This was an unexpected upgrade since the jacuzzi room was the big birthday surprise for my boyfriend. The room itself is truly amazing. It has a queen bed with a separate seating area. There are 4 large windows to let in as much natural light as possible. It has a private balcony overlooking the resort and the Aegean Sea. The jacuzzi is pretty large considering it is in your room. It is part inside and part outside. There is a large glass door that separates it from the outside. My boyfriend was thrilled when he saw it. We immediately jumped in. He even opened his birthday gifts sitting in the jacuzzi pool. If you want some privacy this room will give you that. The bathroom is also very nice and modern. It has a standup shower, sink and toilet. There isn't a great deal of room but it's doable. They also provided robes and slippers which is a nice addition to your relaxing vacation.

The daily breakfast was awesome and better than expected. I knew it was included in our rate but I had no idea it would be this good. Each night you filled out a breakfast card with your choices which had everything from pastries and breads to eggs cooked to order with meats. It was all prepared fresh at the time selected. You could have your breakfast at the restaurant by the pool or in your room. We tried each option and enjoyed them both. The restaurant seating is fantastic to take in the views. The in room option was nice because you don't have to get up and get dressed. I recommend trying both options. There wasn't one thing that we ate that wasn't good.

The staff is outstanding. They knew us by name at first contact. I've already mentioned how helpful they were in arranging lots of surprises in advance and keeping it all a secret as well. We had some flight issues coming in to Mykonos and we thought we might not make it the first day. When I called the resort to let them know about our delay Isabella was so sweet and kind. She knew exactly who I was and assured me they would hold our room and arrange our airport transportation if the flight was rearranged. Luckily, we made our connection and we avoided that little blunder. When we arrived at JMK airport the hotel car was unavailable due to some maintenance issues. Isabella still drove to the airport to meet us and had a taxi take us to the resort. At the resort George took our luggage to the room while we completed check in. Isabella made sure everything was in order that we had pre-arranged and sent us on our way. We had our welcome fruit tray and wine delivered to our room which we enjoyed in the jacuzzi. Throughout our stay the staff was exceptional. Each person was hospitable and personable making sure our every need was taken care of.

The resort was impeccably clean. George and other staff members are constantly cleaning and ensuring that things are in order. It is in a very quiet location. Although there is a road in front of the property the rooms are quiet. We watched the most incredible sunset from our jacuzzi in our room. I've had the chance to see more than 11,000 sunsets in my life and not one compares to the view of the bright orange sun setting over the sparkling royal blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Stunningly beautiful.

If you are looking for impeccable service, private suites, great food and close proximity to activities this is the resort for you. Apanema and all of the staff will welcome you with open arms. They will also hug you when you leave.
